Firefighters field multiple calls to a well-involved house fire in Marlborough - Stuff
Firefighters field multiple calls to a well-involved house fire in Marlborough.
Tea was served in theconservatory, there were seldom any other guests, and after the Princess of Wales had performed her duties as hostess the lovers were usually left to entertain themselves. In the summer time, when the weather is very fine Queen Alexandra and Miss Knollys nearly always have tea in the conservatory when by themselves, and Her Majesty frequently gets through a portion of her correspondence here in the summer afternoons, but guests are not entertained in the conservatory. Queen Alexandra, when in London, I sometimes honors some of her more intimate friends by going to afternoon tea at their house. The Marchioness of Londonderry also discovered the harshness of these social rules. She had the misfortune of having her letters to her lover Harry Cust discovered by her rival for his affections, Gladys de Grey. Gladys read the letters aloud to friends, mocking the marchioness’s fevered words and her abhorrence for her husband.

Beginning about 1817, members of the royal family resided here, Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and his wife, Alexandra of Denmark moved in in the 1860’s, and the society that assembled around this couple became known as the Marlborough House Set. Marlborough House was built for the Duke of Marlborough in 1709–11 on the site of the St James’s Palace pheasantry. Sir Christopher Wren designed the house, though plans were drawn by his son, Christopher Wren the younger. The red Dutch bricks of the walls were ballast returning on vessels which transported soldiers to Holland to fight under the Duke of Marlborough. The house is not usually accessible to the public but in recent years parts have been opened up for viewing on the Saturday of London Open House weekend.

In this connection a rather amusing incident once occurred which may be worth telling. Queen Alexandra went one afternoon to tea with a friend who, of course, instructed her servant to deny her to other callers whilst Her Majesty was with her. Now the servant had only recently entered the lady’s service and was not very familiar apparently with the appearance of Royal personages, and he, therefore carried out his mistress’ instructions rather too precisely. In the old days at Marlborough House, when the late King was Prince of Wales, says a writer in the Lady’s Realm, the exclusive afternoon tea parties given by the then Princess of Wales to her most intimate friends in the celebrated “Marlborough House” set were a special and most delightful feature of Royal hospitality. Sir Charles Mordaunt immediately filed for divorce, and Lady Mordaunt’s affairs were splashed all over the papers, the scandal intensifying when flirtatious letters from the Prince of Wales to the baronet’s wife were unearthed as evidence, and Lady Mordaunt’s lawyers called him up as witness to her defense. The presence of a member of the Royal family in court rocked the nation and questions arose concerning the propriety of the heir to the throne sending letters to a married woman and paying her calls during her husband’s absence.

Marlborough House would serve as the London residence of the Dukes of Marlborough until 1817 when it was taken over by the Crown. The conservatory has, by the way, particular interest for the King and Queen of Spain, for it was there that the Royal couple used to meet very frequently when King Alfonso came to this country in the summer of 1905 to pay his court to the Princess Ena. In those days, of course, Marlborough House was occupied by the present King and Queen, and the then Princess of Wales would frequently ask the Princess Ena to afternoon tea to meet her Royal lover.
Bertie was far from an intellectual, but posssessed with an innate charm and skill as a conversationalist, he managed to form close relationships with Arthur Balfour and Lord Curzon. The Marlboroughs also lost state funding for Blenheim Palace, and the building came to a halt for the first time since it was begun in 1705. As a result of his success in the War of the Spanish Succession, the Duke was a favourite among the German courts and with the Holy Roman Empire, and the family was received in those places with full honours. The Duchess of Marlborough was called to Cambridge in 1703, where her only surviving son, John, Marquess of Blandford, was taken ill with smallpox. She disliked the radical Whigs, whom she saw as a threat to her royal prerogative.[35] The Duchess used her close friendship with Sidney Godolphin, 1st Earl of Godolphin, whom Anne trusted, to eventually secure such appointments, but continued to lobby Anne herself. She sent Whig reading materials to Anne in an attempt to win her over to her own preferred political party.[36] In 1704, Anne confided to Lord Godolphin that she did not think she and the Duchess of Marlborough could ever be true friends again. When Churchill became pregnant, her marriage was announced publicly (on 1 October 1678), and she retired from the court to give birth to her first child, Harriet, who died in infancy.
There is also a reception every year on Commonwealth Day, which is attended by King Charles III in his role as Head of the Commonwealth. Edward and Alexandra moved to Buckingham Palace following his accession in 1901, and Marlborough House became the home of the new Prince and Princess of Wales (later King George V and Queen Mary). Following Edward VII’s death in 1910, George and Mary moved to Buckingham Palace, and the Dowager Queen Alexandra returned to her beloved Marlborough House, where she would remain until her death in 1925. (Click here for a photo of Queen Alexandra’s bedroom, c1912, from the Royal Collection Trust.) Some changes were made the property, including the relocation of the main entrance gate which originally sat on Pall Mall.
The team at Inside Carolina has full coverage of who is coming and who is going on the North Carolina basketball roster. A source told The Clarion Ledger on April 2 that Jackson State had offered Reed a four-year deal worth $1 million to remain at the school, two days after her contract expired. She coached the past four years on a deal that paid her an average of $135,000 per season. The Charlotte Business Journal reported in October 2023 that Charlotte was paying Consuegra $269,100 per season.
Charlotte hires Tomekia Reed as women’s coach after highly successful tenure at HBCU Jackson State
After beating Central Michigan in the first round 91–86, the 49ers dispatched Syracuse 81–59 to advance to the Elite Eight. The 49ers then took out heavily favored Michigan by a score of 75–68 to advance to the program's first and only Final Four—the first time that a first-time participant had ever advanced that far. Charlotte would fall to eventual champions Marquette in the national semifinals 51–49. Their final record was 28–5, still a school record for wins in a season. Following the 2012–13 season, Darion Clark announced he was leaving the program.[11] Clark saw a total of seven minutes in the 49ers' two A10 tournament games, a large drop from his regular season average.

While it is possible that he could withdraw from the draft and return to school, he is expected to stay in the draft as a projected second-round pick. Join Inside Carolina to see the latest on all of North Carolina's roster changes. Dubar averaged 17.8 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting 39.9% on 3-pointers as a senior at Hofstra last season.

He joins former Hostra guard Darlinstone Dubar and former Ohio State center Felix Okpara as Tennessee transfer commitments. A Charlotte win would be the program's 13th all-time victory in postseason play. Charlotte would defeat Tennessee in the first round of the Midwest Regional before falling to #1 seed Illinois in the round of 32.
They followed that with a loss on an emotional senior night at South Florida. They then drew a Memphis team in the CUSA tournament who had under-performed all year but caught fire at the end of the season. Charlotte was bounced from the first round of the CUSA tournament and had their season ended in round 1 of the NCAA tournament by NC State. Seeded fifth in the conference tournament, the 49ers won four games in four days, taking out three of the top four seeds in the process to win the CUSA conference tournament for the first time.

The 49ers should continue their defensive attack by putting pressure on the Panthers' offensive attack. Inducing a higher rate of turnovers will help the 49ers have more opportunities down the stretch. Along with Freeman, Kentrell Pullian saw double figures at 10 points in the contest.
Watkins had two successful seasons as the Charlotte head coach, leading the team into the second round of the NCAA tournament in both years. In their first year in the Sun Belt, the 49ers tallied what is still the best season in school history. They swept the regular season and tournament titles, earning the program's first NCAA Tournament berth. The ensuing NCAA tournament run is still one of the most successful ever for a first-time participant.

This was followed by a miraculous first round A10 tournament victory over Richmond in which PierriĆ” Henry took 11 free throws in the final 4.7 seconds of game time to overcome a 3-point deficit. Richmond was called for three technical fouls, one non-shooting foul and one shooting foul in that time.[10] The 49ers followed this with a blowout loss to St. Louis in the 2nd round. North Carolina's biggest loss from last year's roster is big man Armando Bacot, who averaged a double-double for the third consecutive season with 14.5 points and 10.3 rebounds. He is one of three players in school history to record 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career. The Tar Heels are also losing sharpshooter Cormac Ryan after he averaged 11.5 points in 34 starts. The Times-Picayune reported April 2 that Reed had interviewed for the Tulane job, but the school hired Stony Brook coach Ashley Langford, a former Green Wave player, two days later. The Times-Picayune reported that Reed also had interviewed for the Tennessee job, which went to Marshall's Kim Caldwell. "I want to thank Tomekia for what she has done for Jackson State women's basketball," Jackson State athletic director Ashley Robinson said in a news release. "The work she did during her time here at Jackson State is unmatched, and we wish her nothing but the best at Charlotte." A win would be the 49ers' fourth in a single elimination tournament and the second win over a Horizon League opponent this season.
The success was rewarded with two NCAA Tournament berths, in 1992 and 1995, losing in the first round both times. The following season the 49ers finished second in the Sun Belt and earned an NIT berth. In their final two seasons in the Sun Belt, Mullins led the 49ers to a 30–28 record with no postseason appearances. Despite the loss of the two leaders of the Final Four team from the previous season, Lee Rose guided the 49ers to a fifth consecutive 20-win season in 1977–1978.

Lutz accepted the head coaching job at Gardner–Webb in 1995 only to resign two weeks later to accept the assistant job at his alma mater on Mullin's staff. In what would be Mullins' last season, Charlotte went 14–15 in 1995–1996, finishing tied for 6th in the league. Mullins retired following that season as the all-time winningest coach in school history with 182 wins and also had more postseason appearances than all previous coaches combined. The basketball team has spent the better part of its history in the shadow of the state's four Atlantic Coast Conference teams. However, the 49ers have carved out a niche of their own, making 11 appearances in the NCAA tournament. In their first appearance, in 1977, they advanced all the way to the Final Four—at the time, the deepest run for a first-time tournament participant.
Letters reached Lord Aylesbury about his wife’s affair, and his early departure infuriated the Prince of Wales. The Duchess had a good relationship with her daughter Anne Spencer, Countess of Sunderland, whereas she later became estranged from her daughters Henrietta, Elizabeth and Mary. Heartbroken when Anne died in 1716, the Duchess kept her favourite cup and a lock of her hair and adopted the Sunderlands' youngest child, Lady Diana, who later became her favourite granddaughter. The Duke became one of the King's close advisers, and the Duchess moved back into Marlborough House, where she flaunted her eldest granddaughter, Lady Henrietta Godolphin, in the hope of finding her a suitable marriage partner.
Our Friends
King George and Queen Mary are, of course, also very constant guests at afternoon tea at Marlborough House, but when Their Majesties are present there are never other guests except members of the Royal family. This set was dubbed the “Marlborough House Set,” after Bertie’s London residence, which no doubt shook fear in the hearts of Queen Victoria and her stuffy retainers, whose long memories conjured the raucous, vulgar “Carlton House Set” of the debauched George IV. As the future King of England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and Emperor of India, etc, he saw himself a head above everyone by birth, and as such, welcomed all manners of people into his inner circle so long as they were amusing, well-mannered, sporting, and wealthy.
William III and Mary II
The cakes, sandwiches, etc., are handed round by one or two of the younger members of Queen Alexandra’s household, who are usually in attendance on such occasions. It should perhaps be explained that with the exception of Miss Knollys, there are now no resident members of Queen Alexandra’s household. Members whose presence may be required are notified of the fact and they go to Marlborough House in the morning. Afternoon tea when guests are present is usually served in the Red Saloon, one of perhaps the most beautiful apartments in Marlborough House.

Illustrating her distinguished leadership across four girls’ schools, Jennifer’s references spoke of her student-centric approach, her authentic allyship, her passion for educating and empowering young women, and her ability to articulate her vision, tackle tough topics, and build relationships. A strong-willed woman, she strained her relationship with the Queen whenever they disagreed on political, court, or church appointments. After her final break with Anne in 1711, the Duke and Duchess were dismissed from court, and the Duchess no longer had any communication with her formerly close friend, who died in 1714. Sarah later had famous disagreements with many important people, including her daughter Henrietta Godolphin, 2nd Duchess of Marlborough; the architect of Blenheim Palace, John Vanbrugh; Prime Minister Robert Walpole; King George II; and his wife, Queen Caroline.
The Truth about “Princess Qajar,” the Royal Lady with the Mustache
Sarah Jennings was born on 5 June 1660, probably at Holywell House, St Albans, Hertfordshire.[5] She was the daughter of Richard Jennings (or Jenyns), a Member of Parliament, and Frances Thornhurst (daughter of Susanna Temple, a maid of honour of Anne of Denmark). Her paternal grandfather was Sir John Jennings, father of an extraordinarily large family by his wife Alice Spencer. The Marlborough mansion has been functioning as the headquarters of Common Wealth of Nations to date. Also, the public is allowed to tour during the annual London Open House Weekend.
Abigail Masham: political rival
The house party ended and everyone went their separate ways; however, the story leaked and Gordon Cumming sued his original accusers for defamation. Once again, the Prince of Wales was brought on the stand as a witness, and though Gordon Cumming lost his suit, Bertie’s reputation was in tatters. Tranby Croft also signaled the end of his liaison with Daisy, who had converted to Socialism anyways, and he made strides to rehabilitate his public image by practicing greater discretion (his next mistress, Alice Keppel, fit perfectly into his low-key pleasures). The next scandal was a trifle more discreet and gained Bertie his reigning maĆ®tresse-en-tĆŖte for most of the 1890s, the vivacious Daisy, Lady Brooke, later Countess of Warwick. Daisy was conducting a torrid affair with Lord Charles Beresford, and was outraged to discover Lady Charles Beresford was pregnant by her husband! The impetuous Daisy dispatched a violent letter to her faithless lover, but it was intercepted by Lady Charles who read it contents with dawning horror.
In that role, she expands the academic and extra-curricular vision of the School, as well as its campus, overseeing the construction of Booth Field and Munger Hall, as well as the commencement of the Arden Project. During Mr. Chumbook's tenure, Marlborough expands and enhances campus facilities as well as academic and non-academic offerings and opportunities. The school begins purchasing additional properties adjacent to the campus, and the trustees earmark endowment funds specifically for faculty salaries and student financial assistance. The house was built for Sarah Churchill, first Duchess of Marlborough, and was completed in 1711. It later became a Royal Palace and over the centuries Dowager Queens, Princes, Dukes and Duchesses have stayed in the house. In 1936, Marlborough House became the London residence of George V's widow, Queen Mary, who survived George by 17 years. A thatch-roofed rotating summer house built for her is still in place.[20] A plaque to commemorate Queen Mary was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 1967 on the exterior wall closest to the corner with the Mall.

Over the course of the house party, a few guests began to whisper that Gordon Cumming was cheating at baccarat. The following night, he was closely watched and was indeed manipulating his counters dishonestly. When confronted, Gordon Cumming claimed innocence, but was induced to sign a statement cards again.

During Edward’s occupancy it became the centre of fashionable society and his inner circle became known as the Marlborough House Set. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother had expressed her desire to move there following her husband’s death in 1952, but it was determined that Marlborough House would need extensive refurbishment and would be too expensive to maintain. Clarence House, which had recently been renovated for then-Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, was instead where The Queen Mother would make her home for the remainder of her life. Marlborough House was last used as a royal residence for Queen Mary of the United Kingdom, who lived there until her death in 1953.
In 1922, she invites Miss Ada Blake, then head of Louisville Collegiate School in Kentucky, to interview for the position of assistant principal. After journeying across the continent for a one-day interview, Miss Blake is immediately hired for the position, and upon Mrs. Caswell’s death in February 1924, Miss Blake becomes the second Principal of Marlborough School, a position she held for almost two decades. During Miss Blake's tenure, the curriculum expands significantly and Marlborough begins its evolution into a highly regarded college preparatory school, as each year more and more Marlborough students seek and are admitted to east coast women’s colleges.
For those unaware, Anna first appeared in the drama series during Season 5. The pediatric nurse had leukemia, but luckily she seemed to recover once Severide saved her life by donating bone marrow. Though Darden died in Chicago Fire's debut episode, the impact of his passing created a ripple effect that's still felt many seasons later.
Hanako Greensmith Is Warning Chicago Fire Fans About New Recruit Jack Damon
After discovering her father had no intention of approving her graduation from the training program and intended to place her on desk duty, Rebecca was shattered. In Season 2, Episode 18 ("Until Your Feet Leave the Ground"), Rebecca took her own life, leaving a note for Dawson. Rebecca's death was an emotional wake-up call to many Chicago Fire characters and a horrifying testament to the mental health pressures swirling beneath the surface for many first responders.
Chicago Fire Fans Are In Tears Over Violet And Severide's Bond In Season 11 Episode 4
Rebecca (Daisy Betts) came from a family of Chicago firefighters, and was introduced to Firehouse 51 as a potential candidate in Season 2, Episode 11 ("Shoved In My Face"). She became quick friends with Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund), who was considering transitioning from paramedic to firefighter at the time. Dawson learned that Rebecca's father was a senior in the CFD and strongly opposed his daughter's goal of becoming a firefighter due to the sexist belief that women shouldn't be in the field. Firehouse 51 got a call about the clinic being on fire, leading Casey to rush there in hopes of saving Hallie — but they found her unresponsive and severely burned, and she didn't survive the harrowing ordeal. Hallie's death was incredibly formative to Casey's character, and the investigation led the firefighters to the CPD's Intelligence Unit, sparking the creation of Chicago P.D.

Caroline Dhavernas Slays in Lifetime's 'Mary Kills People'
In the fourth episode, titled "The Center of the Universe," Lieutenant Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) shows up at Violet's (Hanako Greensmith) doorstep and tells her he understands what she's going through. At this point, he mentions his old girlfriend, Anna Turner. Plus, stick around to find out what happened to Anna. Season 11 of Chicago Fire is in full swing, and some of our favorite characters have already been through the wringer. Although most fans are still trying to process the unexpected tragic death of Paramedic Chief Evan Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas), others are reeling over the reference to a character from the past. Her path crossed with Severide when he was visiting the hospital on a job and after getting to know one another, he came to her rescue when she needed a bone marrow transplant to survive.
She tries abruptly leaving to spare him the pain, but instead, Kelly hangs out by her bedside as she fades. Finally, in "Carry Me," Episode 20 of Season 5, he learns that the infection is too much for Anna's system and that she's septic. There's nothing more mere medicine can do for her. Kelly sucks up the news and heads to Anna's room, where she lies dying in the company of her father. Anna demands that Kelly tell her about the woman he left her bedside to help, an elderly woman who refused to leave her burned-out home due to all of the strong memories the place contains. Stella was gleefully prepping for her search for a new firehouse while also celebrating her engagement to Severide, who announced the happy news to their friends and colleagues earlier in the episode.
Personal life
Brett was nearly tasked with caring for her newborn half-sister, but helped Scott accept his role instead. Boden soon learned that his father had been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and had a slim hope of finding a successful treatment plan. Boden did everything in his power to convince his father to fight cancer proactively, but Boden Sr. wished to live his life rather than risk dying from intense chemotherapy. Fans everywhere know that no one’s safe when they hang out with the folks at Firehouse 51. I felt like I was playing cops-and-robbers with my friends, all of whom I’ve stayed in touch with. I play Nicole, the younger sister of the lead character, Dr. Mary Harris (Caroline Dhavernas).
Charlotte Sullivan: Anna Turner
This is the first time we've had a scene with Severide and Violet alone, and it was a pairing the fans didn't know they needed. As expected, Episode 4 of "Chicago Fire" Season 11 was full of emotion. The members of Firehouse 51 (and the viewers who watch them) are still reeling from the death of Evan Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas). Violet (Hanako Greensmith) took his tragic passing the worst, understandably, and fans followed her grief journey throughout the episode. Greensmith absolutely nailed her performance in Episode 3 and kept the same energy going into Episode 4.
[Spoiler] Almost Died in Helicopter Accident on Chicago Med
Another viewer added that the scenes with Violet and Severide stuck out from all others we've seen in the last four episodes. "The only good thing that happened in season 11 so far is severide and violet bonding who knew cf could do something right again?" @caseysbrett tweeted. It might be a rough ride the rest of this season, but giving fans more of Severide and Violet could be the thing that gets them through it. Now we just need a friendship name for them.
Relationships
However, the victim Hawkins risked his life to save did survive, so Hawkin's heroism wasn't put to waste. Evan Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas) was a beloved Paramedic Field Chief for the CFD and the boyfriend of Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith). Hawkins was introduced in Season 10, Episode 2 ("Head Count") as a no-nonsense Chief, but quickly struck up a romance with Violet. Firefighters, Otis' death was a gut-punch felt by the entire One Chicago fanbase. Seconds before dying, Otis uttered his last words to his best friend and fellow Chicago Fire fan favorite, Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso). In Russian, Otis told Cruz, "Brother, I will be with you always."
As the first entree into "One Chicago," "Chicago Fire" has been on the air since 2012. In that time, many members of the Windy City's bravest met their ends by disease or in a fiery blaze, such as fan-favorite Brian "Otis" Zvonecek in Season 8. Kelly's been through a lot on the show since his debut, and not all of it has been negative. For instance, the ladies' man has finally settled into an engagement with Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) after years of refusing to give himself romantically to any one woman. But there also hasn't been any shortage of tragedy.
In need of a little help preparing for the race, Justin turns to his childhood friend, Kayla Green (Sullivan). There are also no added hormones, synthetic pesticides or fertilizers or GMOs allowed. It’s a bit of a miracle that Lowell Cafe is ready to open.
